Trail users in parts of HRM, including Lower Sackville and Windsor Junction, will now see new signage about Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA)—an invasive insect that poses a serious threat to Nova Scotia’s native hemlock forests.
The signs, installed by the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR), have been placed at trailheads including Armcrest, First Lake, and Lakeview/Windsor Junction. Although Sackville Lakes Provincial Park has not reported any confirmed cases of HWA, the pest has been detected in other parts of HRM, including Oakfield Provincial Park.
As part of SWEPS’ ongoing commitment to forest and habitat health in the Shubenacadie Watershed, we encourage trail users to learn how to recognize and prevent the spread of HWA when hiking in hemlock-rich areas.
