Our Watershed

Our History

The Shubenacadie Watershed Environmental Protection Society (SWEPS) is a non-profit, volunteer-driven group dedicated to protecting and improving the Shubenacadie Watershed. Since 1993, SWEPS has focused on keeping water clean, protecting natural habitats, and involving the community through education and restoration projects. The organization works with local governments, including the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and the Municipality of East Hants (MEH), to address land-use planning and wastewater treatment issues.
SWEPS has led community education efforts on septic system maintenance, river clean-ups, drinking water protection, and water quality testing. Since 2012, it has completed multiple stream restoration projects through the Nova Scotia Salmon Association’s Adopt-A-Stream program, showing a strong commitment to habitat conservation. SWEPS also partners with the Shubenacadie Canal Commission to improve trails, making the watershed more accessible to the public.
The organization connects with the community through social media and its website, sharing updates and educational resources. It also hosts public events, like information sessions on environmental issues such as blue-green algae. Through these efforts, SWEPS continues to promote a healthy and sustainable watershed for both the environment and the people who depend on it.

Our Vision & Mission

SWEPS envisions a healthy and resilient Shubenacadie Watershed, where clean water, restored habitats, and sustainable trails support both wildlife and the community. Our mission is to protect and enhance our watershed through habitat restoration, water quality monitoring, and sustainable trail building, ensuring long-term environmental health and accessibility for future generations.

Restoring Habitats Improving fish passage, stabilizing shorelines, and enhancing ecosystems to support biodiversity.
Monitoring Water Quality Collecting and analyzing data to protect water sources, track environmental changes, and advocate for clean waterways.
Building Sustainable Trails Developing and maintaining active transportation routes that connect communities while preserving the natural landscape.
Training the Next Generation of Environmental Stewards Engaging students and community members in citizen science, hands-on restoration projects, and environmental education to foster a lifelong commitment to watershed protection.
