On July 31, SWEPS organized a cleanup of Black’s Brook, a local waterway recently restored through the Adopt-A-Stream program. The cleanup brought together members of SWEPS, partners from Clean Nova Scotia, Adopt-A-Stream, and the Nova Scotia Salmon Association, as well as local volunteers.

The event focused on maintaining the health of the stream following restoration efforts earlier in the year. Volunteers worked along key sections of the brook, clearing branches and adjusting digger logs to help improve water flow and fish passage—particularly important for the fall migration season.
SWEPS volunteers Levi Marshall and Morgan Book focused on enhancing flow over one of the digger logs to support fish movement through the brook.

Black’s Brook appeared to be in good condition overall, with minimal litter found. Volunteers noted that a school cleanup by Lockview High earlier in the summer may have contributed to its current state. Still, the goal remains to ensure the brook stays clean and continues to support local biodiversity.

This cleanup reflects SWEPS’ ongoing commitment to habitat restoration and community-based watershed stewardship in the Shubenacadie Watershed.
